SK

Somchai Klongsakun

Bangkok — Overhaul service

"I brought in a Seiko 6105 that had been sitting in a drawer for years — picked it up in Japan in the 1990s and it stopped working around 2019. Khun Ariya explained everything clearly before starting and the price matched what was agreed at intake. The movement runs within a few seconds a day now. The parts record at collection was something I hadn't seen from a watch shop before."

Nanthipha Wongsiri

Chiang Mai — Regulation service

"My grandfather's Omega was running about 40 seconds fast per day. I called ahead and described the watch before coming down from Chiang Mai. The regulation appointment took one and a half days and the timing report shows it's now within 5 seconds a day. The follow-up check seven days later was a nice detail — I didn't expect them to actually follow through with it, but they did."

James Pellerin

Bangkok (expat) — Strap service

"Came in for a strap replacement on a Longines. The selection on the bench was better than I expected — five or six leather options at different price points. Wanchai fitted it correctly and didn't try to upsell me on anything else. The appointment took about an hour. I'll be back when it needs its overhaul."

Prasat Chulalak

Bangkok — Overhaul service

"My ETA 7750 chronograph had been refusing to reset properly for a couple of years. Khun Ariya examined it, found a worn column wheel detent, and quoted me before opening anything further. The overhaul took five weeks. The watch now runs and resets exactly as it should. Mainspring is not the cheapest option in Bangkok but the documentation and attention to detail are worth the difference."

Visiting Bangkok — Regulation

"I was in Bangkok for work and had about ten days. Contacted Mainspring by email before arriving and they accommodated a short appointment. My Grand Seiko was running about +20 seconds a day and the regulator adjustment brought it to within 3. I couldn't stay for the seven-day follow-up but Ariya was clear about what had been done. Good, reliable bench work."

Atchara Saenkhum

Bangkok — Bracelet service

"The clasp on my mother's old bracelet watch had become very loose — it was sliding off her wrist. Wanchai replaced the pin and tension spring in the clasp, and also found that one of the bracelet links had a hairline crack that I hadn't noticed. They showed me the crack before doing anything and gave me the option to leave it or have it replaced. No pressure either way. Very straightforward."

Case Studies

Three service journeys in detail.

ETA 2824-2 that had stopped completely

Overhaul — 5 weeks

Challenge

A Tissot automatic had stopped running entirely. The owner had been told by another shop that it needed a full overhaul but wasn't sure if this was accurate or whether the watch warranted the cost.

What We Did

Examination showed a broken mainspring. We discussed with the owner whether to replace only the mainspring (quicker, lower cost) or do a full overhaul given the age of the movement. The owner chose a full overhaul. All parts were replaced per schedule; ultrasonic cleaning carried out on all components.

Result

Movement running within ±5 seconds per day across positions. Case polished, bracelet cleaned. Written parts record and timing report provided. Owner noted the watch had not run this consistently in years.

"The timing report alone was something I didn't think to ask for. It's now filed with the watch."

Vintage Longines with inconsistent rate across positions

Regulation — 2 days + follow-up

Challenge

A 1960s Longines manual-wind watch ran at +15 seconds per day when worn normally but at +35 seconds when set down dial-up overnight. The owner suspected a regulation issue but wasn't sure.

What We Did

Timing machine measurement confirmed beat error of 0.8ms and inconsistent amplitude in the vertical positions, pointing to a balance staff in need of examination. After discussion, we adjusted the regulator to prioritise the wearing position and noted that a full service would eventually be needed for the amplitude issue.

Result

Rate improved to +6 seconds per day in the wearing position. Vertical positional difference reduced to 15 seconds. Owner decided to monitor for six months before considering an overhaul. Follow-up check confirmed the regulated rate had held.

"They were honest about the limits of what regulation alone could achieve. No attempt to upsell."

Worn Jubilee-style bracelet on a daily-wear watch

Strap & bracelet service — 90 minutes

Challenge

An owner's daily-wear automatic had developed significant stretch in the bracelet over four years of use. Several links were loose, two pins were worn, and the clasp no longer held tension reliably.

What We Did

Wanchai replaced the two worn pins, restored clasp tension, tightened all link screws, and cleaned the bracelet in an ultrasonic bath. A cracked end-link was found and replaced. The owner also selected a brown leather strap as an alternative for weekends.

Result

Bracelet returned to proper tension with no movement between links. Clasp holds securely. Owner left with both the original bracelet and the new leather strap, with the spring bars adjusted to fit correctly.

"The cracked end-link was something I would never have spotted. Good that they did."
